Update from Limkokwing University – Malaysia

A lot of things happened in the last few month and everyone is packing the last things for their departure on the way to amazing backpacking experiences or to their way home. To compile our experiences in Malaysia I want to show you different collages of the awesome adventures we did.

The German exchange students in Malaysia decided to do a German Cultural Festival with the help of the student ambassadors of Limkokwing. On the 22nd of November we wanted to show the international students, from 160 countries, that Germany consists of more than just two cities. Skylines of Germany was the theme and with this topic we showcased seven different cities – Cologne, Dresden, Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Bremen, Frankfurt – with their way of dressing, food, sightseeing and impressions from the cities.

The Festival was from 11am to 3pm and at 12:30 the performances started. Anna Weidner was singing two songs ‘Satellite’ from Lena Mayer-Landruth and ’99 Luftballons’ from Nena. Kathrin Schmelter danced her Cologne carnival dance with the help of an ambassador, Loay J Idriss.

Our grand finale was the fashion show. In this show we presented the different ways of fashion of eight cities: Munich is the capital of Bavaria and well known for the Oktoberfest and the beauty of the city; the inhabitants are very proud of their culture and local traditions, furthermore this is the reason for showing our Bavarian Tracht. Berlin is the capital of Germany and we presented the young and hip style that young people wear here.

Frankfurt and Düsseldorf had to wear a very chic outfit, to represent the chic and serious behavior of these parts of Germany. Dresden was renown for it’s residential city and was characterized by elegance and pompousness. Cologne had the style of carnival. Hamburg presented the red light district through very short and sexy outfits. Last but not least Bremen and this harbor city with their fishing culture is presented with an outfit prepared for the work at the sea.

I think when we’ll leave Malaysia it will be very hard – we found so many friends here and some of us left a piece of their heart here.

It seems that a few of us already settled into the library as course assignment dead lines get dangerously close and London was quite tempting the last weeks, why most of us decided to rather spend their whole money enjoying the good life instead of studying. In contrast to any other semester abroad location it has never been easier to spend money than in here. Thanks to our professors for giving us enough workload in this case which stops us at least for a few days 😉

To be honest, we don´t have that much to complain about except the weather. We all enjoyed a beautiful Indian summer and made the most of it.

A few students from Berlin founded the `Video Music Production´ society on campus and already shoot one video which we´re all keen to watch after editing.

On another dimension Warner Brother´s built their film set on campus for The Man from U.N.C.L.E., directed by Guy Ritchie, which was exciting to see.  Those who are not that interested in film production but like to get in touch with Guy Ritchie can head to his Pub `Punchbowl´ in posh Mayfair.

The guys who favour pubs but prefer the edgy part of London usually spend their nights in one of the great locations in hip East London. The drawback for real German beer lovers is the handicapped taste of British beer. Due to this,  some Boys adopted the London culture even more by choosing the classical G&T now.

Art lovers (or those who´d like to become so) were lucky as `Frieze Art Fair´ took place in October – the Art Basel´s competing fair on Europe´s playground. Upper-class society members and art professionals from all over the world assembled and spent the whole weekend in the huge exhibition tents absorbing inspiring moments.

In the end of October the „James Bond Route Bus Challenge“ took place. We supported Aisling (our lovely contact of UoG who is doing a GREAT job and makes our stay a lot easier and even better!!) in organizing the event and encouraged 60 abroad students to take part on the mission. Carried in an old red route master bus we were wandering James Bonds footsteps and finished with a treasure hunt that let us turn in potential MI6 spies. It was great fun. Thanks to all the students who attended!

Halloween as itself is important in that sense as Londoners find a reason to celebrate and go out one week long –  apparently without any break.

By all people dressed up as ghosts, witches and horrible figures, the city´s atmosphere got more vibrant exciting, so that even the last party pooper realised that London´s most exiting part of the year is announced – the party season!!

On the 9th of November Leona Lewis was performing on Regent Street and switched on the Christmas Lights, which let people officially feel the pre-Christmas period. Glitters and sparkles seems to be everywhere and even the German Christmas-market already opened its doors yet (for the nostalgic ones of us). The traditional market will be also the location for our goodbye event in approx. 4 weeks after the last exam; where after most of us are flying home for Christmas already. Time goes by so quickly…

Another nameable event was the derby Germany against England in the famous Wembley stadium, where “Jogi´s Jungs” won again – how couldn´t they?;) But the most interesting part for those who are not that interested in soccer, was the fact that the German team took the tube to come to the stadium. It has been probably the only day where it was worth taking the overcrowded Bakerloo line in London´s unpleasant rush hour.

Once you´ve visited London you should go on a daytrip to the countryside. That is exactly what we´re going to do when the traditional Rochester Dickens festival takes place in Kent, which is a great occasion to escape the city´s rush and get into sentimental Christmas mood finally.

Was ich besonders an Abu Dhabi schätze, ist der Umgang unter den Menschen. Vorallem als Frau wird man hier mit so viel Respekt behandelt. Man kann sich kleiden wie man möchte und wird von niemandem schief angeguckt. Man muss allerdings sagen, dass man aus Respekt der Kultur gegenüber schon eher bedeckt rumlaufen sollte. Mittlerweile ist es auch Abends relativ frisch, von daher muss man sich eh eine lange Hose und einen Pullover anziehen. Im Winter kann es bis auf 15 Grad runterkühlen, so im Dezember/Januar rum.

Wer glaubt, dass er hier Weihnachten vermissen wird, der irrt sich. Ich habe heute einen Adventskalender gekauft (nur für den Fall..ich weiss ja nicht wieviel af Lager sind,haha) und die meisten Läden haben sogar Tannenbäume und Weihnachtsdeko aufgestellt. Erst kommt allerdings einer der wichtigsten Feiertage hier in Abu Dhabi. Am 02.12 ist hier national Day, die locals geben Millionen aus um ihre Autos zu dekorieren und in den Nationalfarben zu lackieren. Die Strassen sind mit riesen Flaggen behangen und mit Lichterketten geschmückt. Wir haben schon viel gehört, es soll wohl unvergesslich sein und natürlich gibt es ein großes Feuerwerk zu Ehren des Emirates. Weitere Infos und Bilder folgen dann im Dezember. Das einzig negative ist, dass wir immernoch kein Visum haben…und wir mussten unsere Pässe abgeben. Das heisst, wir können nicht reisen UND wir haben das Visum (welches für ein Jahr gültig ist) praktisch nur 2 Monate gebraucht..wenn überhaupt. Es scheint wohl relativ neu zu sein, dass Gaststudenten aus Europa hierher kommen und das Visum muss in Dubai angefertigt werden. Wir hoffen das Beste und auf einen baldigen Erhalt unseres Visums.

Mittlerweile haben wir uns mit einigen Locals oder auch Non-Locals angefreundet und unternehmen regelmäßig in unserer Freizeit etwas zusammen. Man kommt sich vor wie in einer anderen Welt, wie in einem Märchen. Das System hier mit dem Geld und den Rollen ist wirklich anders als in Europa. Ich persönlich finde es positiv, hier sorgt sich keiner um Geld. Allen Menschen geht es (finanziell) gut und man genießt das Leben so gut wie möglich. Natürlich gibt es auch Schattenseiten und Traditionen die für uns eventuell komisch wirken. Aber man muss sagen, der Staat kümmert sich wirklich um seine Leute. Den Locals werden Häuser geschenkt, Geld, Autos und etliche andere Vorteile.

Letzten Monat war hier beispielsweise eine Reihe von Konzerten ( Jay Z war hier, Ciara, Sean Kingston etc.) und diese Konzerte sind gratis für das Volk und alle Kosten werden vom Staat getragen, damit das Volk sich einen schönen Abend machen kann. Die Uni bietet viele tolle Ausflüge ; wir waren im Global Village, dann waren wir letzte Woche in einem sogenannten “Wild Life Park”, dort werden illegal eingeführte oder gehaltene Tiere aufgenommen. Viele Locals halten sich Tiger und Löwen zu Hause… der Sheik hat diese Organisation gegründet und finanziert diese auch um die Tiere aus dem Häusern zu holen und an den Grenzen einzufangen. Leider gibt es allerdings noch 40.000 illegal gehaltene Tiere in UAE Haushalten. Nächstes Wochenende machen wir dann eine Kayak Tour durch die Mangroven. Die Uni hat nicht nur einen wunderschönen Campus, es gibt so viele Möglichkeiten sich hier zu beschäftigen und neue Dinge zu lernen.

Wir sind auch über die Uni zum Formel 1 Tunier gekommen, gratis! Die Karten für ein Wochenende Formel 1 kosten um die 4000 Dirham und wir haben das geschenkt bekommen. Man fühlt sich wirklich wie eine Prinzessin in Abu Dhabi, ein Traum von tausend und einer Nacht. 🙂 Ich kann es nur jedem empfehlen, der Interesse an Abu Dhabi hat. Macht euch selbst ein Bild davon. 😉
